About Us
Signal Mate designs, manufactures and sells a full line of quality LED navigation lights for the harsh marine environment
to the recreational, commercial, and military marine industries.
Our lights are made with the latest technology of High Brightness LEDs; certified to ABYC A16 / USCG; and designed for
IP67.
Signal Mate also provides a patented Automated Horn and Light Signaling Controller for restricted visibility and distress.
Signal Mate navigation lights have been developed in Baltimore, Maryland from over 60 years of experience in the
electronic industry. The parent company of Signal Mate LLC was Kimberlite Assembler Inc started in 1985.
Kimberlite is a contract manufacturer with quality assurance policies and procedures based on MIL-I-45208A, but also
uses IPC-A-610 standards for the commercial electronics industry. With this accumulated experience and knowledge,
Kimberlite became the sole source supplier for the Electronic Water Level Controller used on Baltimore Air Company’s
cooling towers around the world.
With an inventor’s eye, knowledge of electronics, and USCG 200 Ton Master License, Captain David Horst, Vice President
of Kimberlite Assemblers, had concerns for safety on the water which led to the invention and patent of the Signal Mate
Automated Signaling Controller for synchronized horn and light signaling for restricted visibility and distress. “Been seen.
Be Heard. Be Safe.” For this signaling controller, a light was needed. With a willingness to embrace the latest technology
of High Brightness LEDs, an all-round 360-degree LED light was designed. From there, a whole line of recreational LED
navigation lights was built to ABYC-A16 standards and 72 COLREGS.
In 2014, the owners of Kimberlite started a new company, Signal Mate LLC, for the marine division. David Horst is
President, and chief engineer of Signal Mate.
Many customers after seeing the quality of the recreational navigation lights requested the design for commercial lights
to the UL1104 standards.
A full line of UL1104 lights were designed and certified that also meet the IMO Resolution MSC.253(83) by monitoring of
the LED intensity and notifying the bridge when the intensity of the light is not COLREG compliant. The monitoring of the
LED intensity and the modular design is patented.
The UL1104 commercial line of marine navigational lights has been purchased in 2021 by Phoenix Lighting in Milwaukee,
WI. www.phoenixlighting.com
